Down mattress toppers are the perfect solution for getting a more comfortable night's sleep without buying a new mattress. If you're not allergic to down, read ahead for your guide to buying a goose down mattress topper.

From Quick Guide: Mattresses
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check the return policy. Be sure you can return the topper after you open it because you can't try out mattress toppers in stores.

  2. Step 2

Make sure your fitted sheets are large or deep enough to fit over the new down topper. Most down toppers are about five inches thick.

  3. Step 3

In March 2007, Consumer Reports published a study that rated $130-150 feather beds, noting that some can be lumpy or shift overnight. When purchasing, look for mattress toppers packed with feathers to possibly prevent that lumpy look.

  4. Step 4

Avoid the cheapest option. Less expensive down mattress toppers sometimes use feathers that still have quills attached. These can be uncomfortable if they stick out of the fabric, leading to fabric deterioration over time.

  5. Step 5

It all comes down to feel. Try the topper out for a few nights and see if it's causing any back pain. If it is, return it and purchase a new one until you get the perfect fit for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're allergic to down, but love the comfort it brings, a hypoallergenic cover that fits over the topper can save you from sneezing.
