Cowhide rug care doesn't require buying any special chemicals or cleaners. In fact, regular cleaning of your cowhide rug is as simple as shaking it outdoors or spot-cleaning with a household sponge. Discover the right way to clean your hair-on-hide rug and keep it like-new for years to come.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Vacuum the rug with a brush attachment (never running the vacuum directly over the rug) or by shaking it outside.

  2. Step 2

Do not throw your cowhide rug in the washer, immerse it in water or have it dry cleaned. If you need to spot clean the rug, wipe it with a damp soapy cloth in the direction of the hair. Remove solid messes or spills with a solid edged spatula or utensil and blot or wipe out the rest.

  3. Step 3

Keep cowhide rugs in dry places, especially after spot cleaning. According to Debandada Cowhide, use a dehumidifier in the room to regularly remove moisture. Placing the hair-on-hide rug belly up in the sun will help it dry quicker.

  4. Step 4

If your rug is looking a little flat, perk it up by brushing with a stiff plastic brush. This will also help to remove dirt and dust.

Tips & Warnings
  • Soaking your cowhide rug is the worst thing you could do. Avoid steam cleaners and the washing machine.
