How to Open a Wine Bottle With Scissors

Most bottles of wine will have a cork in the opening of the bottle. A basic corkscrew will get these corks right out of the bottle. If you don't have a corkscrew handy, however, you can still remove the cork from the bottle with a standard pair of scissors. With this method, the scissors simply replace the corkscrew. With a little bit of force and ingenuity, you can remove the cork from any wine bottle. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Find the right pair of scissor to open the wine bottle. The scissors should have blades that are at least 3 inches long. The blade will also have to be narrow enough so that an 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches of the blade (depending on the size of the cork) can enter the cork through the opening of the wine bottle.

    • 2

Open the scissors all the way. Choose which end you will use. You can use either blade.

    • 3

Jam the end you chose in Step 2 directly into the center of the cork. Use enough force so that the blade enters the cork and creates a small hole. Leave the scissors in the cork, holding onto the scissors if necessary.

    • 4

Hammer the blade deeper into the cork. To do this, use a hammer, can of food or other blunt object. Strike the handle of the blade that is in the cork. Your other hand should be holding the wine bottle, keeping the wine bottle stable. Continue doing this until the blade is roughly halfway into the cork.

    • 5

Hold the bottle of wine in between your legs with the opening facing slightly away from your body.

    • 6

Grab the two handles of the scissors. Spin the cork (either direction) while pulling the cork up and towards the opening of the wine bottle.

    • 7

Continue doing this until the cork has been fully removed from the wine bottle.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is much easier to do if you have a partner as the partner can hold the bottle while you extract the cork from the wine bottle. You can also try to hold the bottle with one hand while you remove the cork with only one hand on the handle of the blade that is in the cork. This is much more difficult than holding the bottle between your legs, though. If possible, sharpen the blade on the scissors before you enter it into the cork. This will make the entire process much easier.

  • Be sure to avoid hammering the blade too deep into the cork. Otherwise, you could break the cork (which would cause pieces to fall into the bottle) or even hammer the entire cork into the bottle. Don't use much force when hammering the blade into the cork. Too much force and you could put a crack into the wine bottle.
