How to Convert WMA Files to MP3 Files

Windows Media Audio files, also known as "WMA" files or "WMAs," cannot always be put directly onto a portable media player. To add these songs to such an mp3 player, you first need to convert the songs from WMP files to mp3 files. The same program that makes WMA files, Windows Media Player, can be used to convert those same files into mp3 files.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install Windows Media Player if you already don't have the program on your computer.

    • 2

Create a music CD with the WMA files on the CD. You can use whichever program you wish (Windows Media Player, iTunes, Real Player, etc.) to burn the files onto a blank CD (see Resources).

    • 3

Open Windows Media Player. Click the "Tools" option found at the very top of the program. A drop box will appear.

    • 4

Select "Options" and a separate box will open.

    • 5

      Click the "Rip Music" tab.

    • 6

Find the "Format" heading in the middle of the "Rip Music" box. Click the tab that is underneath the "Format" heading and another drop box will appear.

    • 7

Select "mp3" in the drop down box. Click the "Apply" tab at the bottom of the "Rip Music" box. Look at the information underneath the "Rip music to this location" heading. This folder is where your mp3 files will go once you're done.

    • 8

Click "OK" at the bottom of the "Rip Music" box.

    • 9

Put the CD you burned in step 2 into your computer. Allow the CD to load.

    • 10

Click the "Rip" tab at the top of Windows Media Player. The files will be listed on the screen.

    • 11

Click the "Start Rip" tab at the bottom of the screen and the WMA files will be ripped onto your computer as mp3 files.
