Draw Chibi Animals
Illustratons by Andrew DeWitt

Chibi Animals are comical drawings of small animals done in a Japanese Manga or Anime style. Chibi means "little" or short. Chibi animals are extremely simplified and cute versions of the animals they represent. Drawing something in Chibi style means that you are boiling the character or animal down to its most basic shapes in order to get an intense emotional reaction from how it looks. Drawing animals in Chibi can lead to some interesting and hilarious results. A Chibi style rabbit is a good animal to begin with. It utilizes simple shapes but has expressive ears, eyes and in this case, an overly expressive tongue.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pencil
  • Black Ink Pen
  • Paper
  • Marker
  • Kneaded Eraser
  1. Step 1

Draw a wide oval for the head. Add a long oval on the base of this for the body. Add two long ovals on the top of the head for the ears.

  2. Step 2

Add two long small ovals for the front paws on each side of the rabbit. Add two wide ovals at the base of the rabbit for the feet. Add a semi circle for the tail. Add jagged lines to the bunny tail with triangular shapes around the tail.

  3. Step 3

Draw the eyes with small circles near the top two side of the head. Add wide ovals below and to the right and left of the eyes for the cheeks. Add a curved "W" shape in the middle of the face for the rabbit's mouth. Attach the tongue to the mouth with a wide oval shape that comes down into the torso of the rabbit.

  4. Step 4

Add curved lines to the inside of the ears. Make sure these lines follow the flow of the ear. Add a curved line down the middle of the tongue. Separate the fingers on the front paws by drawing three vertical lines on each paw.

  5. Step 5

Erase the guidelines. Ink the entire drawing. Let the ink dry and erase the pencil. Darken in the eyes with a marker.

Tips & Warnings
  • Chibi animals often have wildly exaggerated features. Don't be afraid to go overboard.
  • Let the ink dry before you erase the pencil or the picture will smudge.
