How to Install Memory Chips
Random Access Memory (also known as RAM or simply Memory) is a type of computer memory. Unlike a hard drive, RAM isn't used for long-term storage of data, but is considered "volatile memory," meaning any information stored in the RAM is lost once the computer is shut down. Along with the processor speed, hard drive capacity and display capabilities, the amount of RAM present in a computer is one of the important factors in determining its capabilities.

Determine how much RAM you currently have and how much your computer is capable of handling. At the same time, see what type of chip your computer uses. Windows users can find out by going to the Start Menu, right clicking "My Computer" and selecting "Properties." Mac users can select "About This Mac" under the Apple in the upper left of the screen, select "More Info..." and choose "Memory" from the Hardware list.

Installing in a laptop can be slightly more complex. Some require the keyboard or battery to be removed to access the RAM, while for others it's simply removing a plate on the bottom to install the chips. Just make sure that all cables are disconnected from the computer, and that the battery has been removed.

Tips & Warnings
Sell the old chips on eBay to defray the cost of the new chips. You won't get much for them, but every little bit helps. If you're going through the trouble of upgrading the RAM, be sure to max it out. Ordering RAM online is almost always less expensive than buying it locally.
Always use a static strap to avoid shocks when working with RAM. Buy RAM from reputable dealers only.
