How to Clean Fireplace Glass

There's nothing cozier than a lit fireplace in the wintertime. The problem is, after you've enjoyed a few fires, you find to your dismay that the glass fireplace doors are coated with soot. Regular glass cleaner just seems to smear it around at best, leaving your doors looking worse than before you started cleaning. There's a knack to cleaning glass fireplace doors, and soon you'll be viewing that fire in a whole new light. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Orange based household cleaner
  • Ammonia
  • Rag
  • Paper towels

      Open the fireplace doors all the way and place a thick layer of newspapers on the hearth beneath them.

      Spray the inside of the glass liberally with the orange cleaner until the entire surface is coated. Let it stand for 15 minutes.

      Mix 1/2 cup of ammonia with 1 quart of hot water.

      Wipe down the glass, folding your paper towel to a clean area as needed. The soot buildup will wipe off easily. Spot clean any areas that remains.

      Dip a rag in the ammonia mixture and wring out the excess moisture. Wipe down the glass, using a circular motion to cover the entire surface. This will cut any remaining oil residue.

      Buff the fireplace glass dry with a paper towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ammonia has toxic fumes, so be careful not to breathe the hot steam.
