How to Make Fleece Blankets for Kids

A warm and cozy fleece blanket is one of life's simple pleasures. As a newborn baby, it was probably one of your first sensations. Here is an easy project that will allow you to create a beautiful and durable fleece blanket for a special little person in your life. The best part of all is that you don't need to be skilled with a needle because no sewing will be required to make your fleece blanket. Even if your little one is no longer quite so little, he or she will enjoy owning and using these attractive fleece blankets that can be made in various sizes.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 equal pieces of fleece fabric (40 to 54 inches wide and 1 to 1 1/2 yards long for an infant or toddler, 1 3/4 yards long for a child, and up to 2 yards long for most teens)
  • Very sharp scissors
  • Tape measure or ruler
  • 4-by-4-inch piece of paper or card stock

Instructions

    • 1

Place one piece of fleece evenly on top of the other, "wrong" sides together. You may find it easiest to spread the material out on the floor unless you have access to a very long, wide table.

    • 2

Cut away the machine made stitches (sedging) that are present on the edges of your material. Try to trim fewer than 2 inches. Cut as straight as possible, but the line won't need to be perfect. You need to cut both pieces of fleece at the same time. Discard the extra material.

    • 3

Place the card stock at the corner of the fleece. Cut around the paper through both pieces of fleece material. Repeat at the other three corners. Place your scissors 1 inch away from one of the four notches that you removed at the corners. Cut a slit 4 inches deep through both pieces of fleece. Remove the scissors and move over 1 inch. Cut another slit 4 inches deep into both layers. Repeat the 4-inch long cuts at 1-inch wide intervals all around the fleece blanket.

    • 4

Begin at one corner of one side to tie every other upper and lower fringe together. This means you will take the first double-layered fringe and tie them together (a double knot is best). Skip the next set of fringe, and tie the next upper and lower layers of fringe together. Repeat this pattern all around the fleece blanket.

    • 5

Flip the fleece blanket onto the opposite side. The remaining fringe sections can now be tied. Doing this allows you to create a reversible blanket that won't come apart even in the washing machine.

    • 6

Examine your work and make sure that the knots are secure and that all the fringes have been properly tied. Your fleece blanket is now complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make your fringe the same length all around, extend your tape measure from one corner notch to another and 4 inches from the outer edge. Now cut with your scissors until you reach the tape measure, knowing that you have reached a depth of 4 inches. Use the tape measure as a guide when you move over 1 inch to repeat the next 4-inch cut.

  • The suggested dimensions in the materials list are a general guideline. Feel free to make larger fleece blankets for taller individuals.
