How to Make a Lasso Necklace

Sometimes necklace clasps are a pain, especially since they are small and awkward. Often our fingers are too large to work the lever properly, or arthritis prevents us from opening and closing the clasps. Lasso necklaces, however, eliminate the frustration of clasps because of their simple pull-through design. Lasso necklaces are more fun if they're homemade.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cut one piece of thread to be 36 inches in length. You can make this thread shorter or longer, depending on how long you want your necklace.

    • 2

Thread one end of the thread through a beading needle. Leave the other end loose for now. Do not tie a knot at the other end.

    • 3

Take 22 seed beads and put them on the needle. Push the beads to the center of the thread.

    • 4

Place a beading needle at the loose end of the thread. Put the two needles side by side and weave the needles and thread through one seed bead.

    • 5

Push the seed bead up to the 22 centered seed beads. By pushing this bead up, you should have formed a loop with the 22 centered beads.

    • 6

Remove one needle from one thread. Place the loose thread through the remaining needle.

    • 7

Add more seed beads to the threads until you have reached the desired length. You can use the same color beads all throughout the line, or you can alternate the colors.

    • 8

Remove one thread from the needle. Place the loose thread through the second needle.

    • 9

Place beads on each needle and thread until you reach the desired length. Next, place one medium-sized bead on each side with one additional seed bead on each side.

    • 10

Weave your threads through the medium-sized beads again. Do not thread the threads through the last seed beads you added in step 9, because they act as a stoppers. Pull your threads tight so the beads aren't loose.

    • 11

Tie knots with the threads near the tops of the medium-sized beads. Place a dab of glue on each knot and let dry. Snip the loose ends.

    • 12

The two bead strands at the end of the necklace go through the loop you created in step 5. The two medium-sized beads help prevent the necklace from slipping.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you double the length of your thread, you can have a longer necklace. With a longer necklace, you can create a layered look by wrapping the strands around your neck many times. If you use bigger beads, you can use this technique to make unique belts.

  • Keep some masking tape nearby. Seed beads have a tendency to roll away and the tape will help pick those beads up.
