There are a wide variety of Apple computers on the market. Apple computers are most commonly referred to as Macs or Macintosh, after the operating system. Apple computers are well known for being more reliable than Microsoft, or Windows computers. They are a little more expensive, but typically require less upkeep than other brands. Choosing the perfect Apple computer depends solely on each individual user's needs. Most retail computer stores sell Apple computers. You can also purchase conveniently online.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide whether you want a notebook or desktop. If you are a mobile user, choose a laptop. If you prefer having a set location for your computer, choose a desktop. The MacBook and MacBook Air are two of the most popular notebooks for the average user.
For desktop users, you can utilize your existing monitor, keyboard and mouse by choosing the Mac mini, which is basically a miniature computer with 1 GB of RAM and up to a 120 GB hard drive. The iMac is by far the most popular desktop model. All components are built into the display to save space. The iMac also has Duo Core processors up to 3.06 GHz.

  2. Step 2

Decide what you will use the computer for. You will require different hardware for different tasks. For instance, a gamer will require a different graphics card and more RAM than the average user. Users wanting the best of the best should look closely at the MacBook Pro and Mac Pro. These models are higher in price, but offer the most storage space, memory, fastest processors and top-of-the-line graphics cards. The average user would be better served with a MacBook or iMac. These models work perfectly for music, movies, photos and documents.

  3. Step 3

Determine how much hard drive space you will need. For users who want to download from iTunes, you may want a larger hard drive to store music and video.

  4. Step 4

Determine your software needs. Will you need a desktop publishing suite, developer tools, music and video editing and creation, server software, or a combination? Exploring the software options on the Apple site is a great way to determine your needs. Some of the most common software options are iTunes for downloading, iLife for media and the iWork productivity suite.

  5. Step 5

Determine which models will work with your current hardware. This includes printers, scanners, external drives and any other external hardware. The best way to determine this is to visit the manufacturer's website to see which operating systems are supported.

  6. Step 6

Look at bundle prices at your local electronics stores and online. Sometimes this is the deciding factor after narrowing down your choices in the above steps.
