How to Check the Type of RAM in a Laptop

Every laptop computer comes installed with a certain amount of RAM, which stands for random access memory. RAM is an integral part of all computer operations and is used to store small amounts of data at fast rates. Both PC and Mac laptops use similar types of RAM, but you may want to check to see what type your computer is using, especially if you plan on replacing or upgrading your memory.

Instructions

    PC Instructions

  1. Step 1

    Open the Start menu by clicking on the icon in the lower-left corner of the screen.

  2. Step 2

    Go into the "All Programs" list and choose "Accessories."

  3. Step 3

    Go into the "System Tools" folder and select "System Information."

  4. Step 4

    Double-click on the "Hardware Resources" menu on the left side of the window.

  5. Step 5

    Click on the "Memory" tab to view all information about the RAM that is currently installed.

  6. Mac Instructions

  7. Step 1

    Click on the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of the laptop screen and choose "About this Mac."

  8. Step 2

    Click on the "More Info" button in the pop-up window.

  9. Step 3

    Expand the "Hardware" category heading.

  10. Step 4

    Click on the "Memory" option in the list to view all information about the RAM currently installed.
