How to Create a Retail Company Logo for Free
A striking logo is extremely important to the success of a business. A logo must inspire confidence and let the customer know what the company is all about, even if she only looks at it for a split second. You could hire a graphic designer to create a logo for you, but that would be somewhat expensive. Thanks to the amazing technological advances we've experienced in the past few years, it's possible to create your own retail company logo for free.

1
Sketch out lots of ideas for your retail company logo. You could base your design around the first letter of your retail company's name. If you sell shoes, consider working a stiletto in there somewhere. Make a conscious effort to watch out for all of the many logos you see every day. Think about what you like and dislike about each of these designs, then compare those ideas with your own.

2
Download a graphic-design program onto your computer. You have a couple of options. Programs like Adobe Photoshop are fairly easy to use and are the gold standard for graphic designers all over the world. On the other hand, they can be a little pricey, particularly if you're not planning to use them a lot. There are shareware programs like GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) that you can download for free. (See Resources.) Thankfully, they're not that much harder to use.

Practice on your design program for a while so you can learn the functions. The program's toolbar is likely to be fairly intuitive. Click on the little pencil icon to start drawing. Click on the little "A" button to bring up a text box. Start drawing the elements of your logo from the sketches you made on paper.

4
Fine-tune the elements of your logo. No detail is too small. Look at your logo with italicized text, bold text and different fonts. Experiment with different colors, angles and elements until your logo communicates the message you want.
-
5
Solicit objective feedback from people you know. Show them a few versions of your logo and have them tell you what they don't like. After you consider their criticism, adjust your logo accordingly.
-
6
Broadcast your retail company logo wherever you can, taking further comfort in the fact that you made it yourself--and it was free, too.
