Safely remove Norton Antivirus from your Mac

Macintosh computers are popular for the ease of their drag and drop feature, which allows users to quickly remove files from the system. Unfortunately, simply dragging a Macintosh application to the trash does not necessarily mean the program has been completely uninstalled. Software applications often install numerous support files in various locations on your computer. One of the easiest ways to ensure that an application is fully removed is by using a program such as AppZapper. You can uninstall the Norton Antivirus program from your Mac, with a Tiger or Leopard operating system, in just a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Download AppZapper from the software's official website (see Resources below). Once the application has downloaded, double-click the DMG file. Click "Agree" to the AppZapper license agreement. The AppZapper volume will mount onto your desktop.

    • 2

Double-click the mounted AppZapper volume. Drag the AppZapper icon from the open window to your Applications folder.

    • 3

Double-click its icon in the Applications folder to open it. AppZapper will warn you that you are allowed 15 uses before you need to purchase it.

    • 4

Open your Applications folder. Drag the Norton Antivirus icon to the square located in the center of AppZapper.

    • 5

Notice that AppZapper will show you all Norton Antivirus related files on your computer. You have the option to uncheck the files you do not want to delete. Click the "Zap" button and the selected files will be moved to the trash.

    • 6

Empty your trashcan to completely remove the Norton Antivirus files from your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you remove Norton Antivirus from your computer, be sure to either double-check the strength of your computer firewall or install another security software to protect your computer.

I do not have the Norton icon in my Apps but have the Norton Quick Menu in my task bar. A search of the Mac's hard drive produces no results for anything called Norton yet the icon remains with some functionality. I want to remove it completely but cannot use the above solution due to lack of icon. Does anybody have any tips? Its version 0.1 from 2003.
