Bicycle mechanics use a variety of tools in their jobs, one tool that is used daily is the bicycle stand. Bicycle repair stands allow the mechanic to hold the bicycle up off of the floor and repair it from a seated or standing position. This allows a range of movement for the bicycle and the mechanic that make routine repairs easier and more convenient to perform. A good repair stand from a reputable company could cost upwards of $300, a bit more expensive than what the typical home mechanic is willing to pay. Luckily there is a less expensive alternative in building your own stand.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Iron plumbing pipe
  • Iron plumbing "T"s
  • 2 chunks of scrap lumber
  • Bolts
  • Styrofoam pipe insulation
  • Ratchet set
  • Screwdriver set
  1. Step 1

Begin by building the base first. Make an "H" out of the pipes by using the ratchet to screw two 10 inch sections of pipe to either side of a T. Also screw two 12 inch sections of pipe by hand into either side of a T. Connect the end of the 10 inch sections to the T that the 12 inch sections are screwed into with the ratchet. Repeat the process for the other end of the 10 inch sections for form an "H."

  2. Step 2

Use the screwdriver to bolt the top and bottom of the H to the pieces of scrap lumber to provide a wider base for the stand. Screw a 3 foot length of pipe into the center T of the crossmember for the H shaped base. At the top of the 3 foot pipe, connect a 90 degree elbow with the ratchet and attach a T at the end of the elbow.

  3. Step 3

Connect two lengths (6 inches or so) of pipe to each side of the T and then connect 90 degree elbows to the end of the short pipes with the ratchet. Wrap all of the pipes in foam insulation and mount your bike on the rack by resting its top tube on the flat surface created at the top of the rack.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are other versions of stands similar to this one available as kits on various online stores, and the ease of construction of these kits may outweigh the time in sourcing materials for this project.
  • This stand does not support bikes that do not have a flat top tube.
