Monkey Train, aka Mexican Train, aka Mexican Express, is a simple variation on dominoes that eliminates most of the complicated aspects of standard dominoes. This allows the game to be played much faster, and to be played by anyone, regardless of experience.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Standard set of double-12 dominoes
  • Large playing area
  1. Step 1

Mix the dominoes face-down and deal 15 to each player. The player with the double-12 tile (12 pips on each side) places it in the center of the table, as the engine. If no player has the double-12 tile, each player draws a tile. Repeat as necessary until someone has the tile, and plays it. Whoever plays the double-12 tile is the starting player.

  2. Step 2

Start your train by playing a domino off of the center engine. The side you touch to the engine must have the same number of pips as one half of the engine domino (e.g., in the first round, 12). You may then play an additional domino straight off of your first domino, in a line. You may continue playing as many dominoes onto your own train in a straight line as you can. When you are done, play proceeds clockwise and the next player starts a train, until each player has started a train. (If you are unable to play a domino, you must draw one of the remaining face-down dominoes. If you are still unable to play a domino, your turn passes.)

  3. Step 3

Any player may start the Monkey Train by placing an additional tile off of the center engine to start an extra train usable by all players. Once the Monkey Train is started, any player may play on the Monkey Train as if it were her own train.

  4. Step 4

Play a domino on your turn by matching the end of your train (or the Monkey Train) and extending it in a straight line with one additional domino. If you play a double domino (same on both sides), you must immediately play another domino. If you are unable to play a domino, you must draw one of the remaining face-down dominoes. If you are still unable to play a domino, your turn passes.

  5. Step 5

Call out "Uno!" when you have only a single domino remaining. If you fail to do this, then any player may force you to draw another domino when you are about to win.

  6. Step 6

End the round as soon as one player plays his last domino. All other players score a point for each pip remaining on their unplayed dominoes. Begin a new round from Step 1, starting with the double-11 tile instead of the double-12. Each round, the starting double tile decreases by one, until the final round is played with a double-blank engine.

  7. Step 7

End the game once 13 rounds have been played. The player with the lowest score wins.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some variations only allow you to start your train with a single tile in Step 2.
