Cyberpunk Costume

You may be in need of a fantastic cyberpunk costume if you're attending GenCon, into the Cyberpunk 2020 RPG, or going to a cyberpunk themed party. A good cyberpunk costume should be a mixture of 80's street punk glam-rock, vinyl & pvc clothing, weaponry and, of course, cybernetics. Think Joan Jett meets Tank Girl meets Blade Runner for starters.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mirrored sunglasses
  • Fake knives and/or fake gun
  • Black boots
  • Black clothing, preferably made of vinyl or pvc
  • Studded and/or sharp accessories
  • Black eye liner
  • Various electronic gadgets
  1. Step 1

Choose the basic clothing for your cyberpunk costume. This can be as simple as a pair of black jeans paired with a black tank top, to something more extreme, such as low rise black PVC pants paired with a vinyl cropped top. Later you will add to this base clothing and accessorize to authenticate your cyberpunk fashion. Generally, cyberpunks are scantily clad, though this is not necessary. Many people get their basic clothing from an army supply store where they can get BDU pants and a tactical vest.

  2. Step 2

Choose your shoes, or boots rather. The color should be black. There are many styles of boots out there, but you should consider wearing boots that are at least 14 holes high. This is so you may tuck your pants into them and show them off a little. Women can have stiletto heels on their boots, or go with flat heeled army style boots. Again, vinyl and PVC are good choices of material, but not necessary. Boots that have chains, buckles or are studded are an added bonus.

  3. Step 3

Accessorize to optimize your cyberpunk costume. Common accessories include the use of belts, buckles, studded bracelets/armlets, shoulder armor, leather jackets, mirrored sunglasses, fingerless gloves, arm warmers, gun harnesses and goggles. Body modification is not unusual, such as piercings, tattoos, surgical implants and the like. If you don't want to do anything permanent, consider applying customized fake tattoos with Harquus ink (see resource section), wearing a corset or waist cincher or wearing an unusual wig.

  4. Step 4

Choose your weaponry. Most cyberpunk costumes should include a weapon of some sort be it guns, knives or grenades. This is because they are always rebelling against the technology and machines that have taken over humanity. Go to your local toy store of choice and pick up a few fake weapons. Most of these are going to be brightly colored so as not to be confused for a real weapon. Try to choose odd-looking, sci-fi sort of weapons that you could paint if necessary, but won't look real. A super-soaker painted black is a good choice.

  5. Step 5

Try to work in some cybernetics and other technological gadgets. In the near future where most cyberpunk works are set, man has become reliant on technology and machines, enslaved to them even. It is not uncommon to see someone with replaced cybernetic body parts, like an arm or leg, or to see someone with a cybernetic implant. To get this look, you can attempt to build a body part out of various electrical gadgets or even gray colored legos. For an implant look, use liquid latex or spirit gum to glue a microchip, or LEDs onto your head or other body parts. For a bionic eye, purchase contact lenses with various digital images on them or odd colors. Though cyberpunks rally against the control of technology over humanity, they try to harness and dominate it in order to keep their freedom.

  6. Step 6

Last, consider your hair and make-up to complete your look. Both men and women are encouraged to wear make-up, especially eyeliner, but it is not necessary. Strange hair colors and cuts are not unusual. Shaved heads are also common as they allow for implants or scalp tattoos to be seen.

Tips & Warnings
  • Watch movies like Blade Runner or The Matrix for ideas.
  • Don't overdue it. It's easy to get carried away with these costumes, but remember that cyberpunks are generally on their own and not part of the general society.
