If you are looking for a fairly quick project for a child's room, or for that matter, anywhere you care to place one in your home, you can make a "faux" quilted sampler, using 1" or 2" square pieces of different fabric, and attaching to a 2" thick piece of foam board.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • foam board
  • fabric of different colors/patterns
  • library book of quilting patterns
  • butter knife
  • small piece of ribbon
  • or picture hanger
  1. Step 1
    various fabrics

Make a visit to the library and find a book or books on quilting patterns, to find one you like, or maybe you have some already, or know someone that has some quilting books.
Go to a fabric store and look for the small pieces of fabric on sale, unless you want to invest more money and buy a quarter yard of various fabrics that you like. They could be all cotton, or all silk.

  2. Step 2

Another project would be if you wanted to make a scene on the board, such as hills with trees and a house and barn, or a city scape or whatever tickles your fancy. Again, depending upon where you want to put it upon completion.

  3. Step 3
    another quilting pattern

Purchase a piece of 1" OR 2" thick foam board, again depending upon your preference at a sewing store or craft store..
Cut your pieces of fabric in the pattern that you want. Lay them out on a table or the floor and play with them to get the desired pattern in place.
Begin placing them on the board. Begin in the center. Find the center by measuring in from the top and bottom. Using a butter knife, press the first piece of the fabric about an 1/8 of an inch, or less into the foam board You don't want to push it all the way in yet, because you are going to be placing the adjoining piece in the same groove.
    Continue with your pattern.

  4. Step 4

When complete, you could add braid, cording, lace, large ribbon, or binding around the 2" thickness of the foam board for a finished look.

This will be really lighweight, so you could make a look with a bow at one end of a ribbon, and attach the bow side with a stronger straight pin to the top of the foam board, and use the loop to hang.

You could also glue or pin a picture hanger to the back of the foam board and hang it that way.
