A decision as difficult as selecting if a nursing home or assisted living facility is needed, can only be made by family together. I will explain some pointers that can help.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

You have observed your loved one is no longer able to live on their own. Your home is open to them, adjustments by everyone in the house are planned. The privacy of the entire family is compromised and changed to accommodate the needs of the loved one. Would this be a good time to consider a nursing home or assisted living facility?

  2. Step 2

Many things are found to be a safety issue while you are not instantly aware. Your family member tried to fit in and not be a burden. It is not an issue of that new addition to your home not wanting to do the correct things. Remember it is a huge adjustment for them too. Your idea is to designate someone to the questionable concerns. At times, even into the night, you are summoned to be aware of safety for everyone. You find the stove on then happily think you were glad you did not abandon your task. Leaving for a day of work brings anxiety for fear of what might happen in your absence. Should you look at a nursing home or assisted living quarters for your loved one?

  3. Step 3

Because it is not a question of not wanting to comply with what you expect of a loved one, you can't ask them to be careful. Their mind might not be fully functioning and you do not want to ask something that is not possible for them to do. Your sleep is sometimes repeatedly interrupted by moving of furniture or getting dressed and undressed several times at night. Then one morning you are not able to find your loved one after a complete house search. When it is time to select a nursing home or an assisted living facility for your loved one?

Tips & Warnings
  • I mention all this since these were only some of the issues I faced before finally finding a safe place for my loved one. It ended up being safer for my entire family too.
