One of my favorite children's birthday party themes is the Zoo party. And I don't mean a party at a Zoo, but one at your home with a Zoo theme. It is much less expensive to host a party at your home. And if you follow these simple ideas, you can have a fabulous and fun Zoo theme party that your children with never forget. Does this Spark an idea?

Your first step is to plan your invitation. This will look like a brochure from a zoo. By using the columns feature on Microsoft Word, divide your page into two columns. You will need two pages, one for the front and one for the back. You will fold this in half and tape it shut to mail it. Put a picture of your child on the back right column. Make a caption that says "It's Been a Zoo Around Here". On the other half of the back make a return address with your last name as the name of the Zoo. "The Johnson Zoo" for example. The invitee' s address will go in the middle of this column. If you make your return address in a text box, you can rotate it to go in the correct direction for a mailing. Inside, put all of your party information. Make it read like a Zoo brochure. It can read something like:
Dear Family and Friends:
We've been so busy feeding the animals, we haven't noticed how they've grown! Come see the wildlife in their natural habitat and join with us zoo keepers for a roaring birthday celebration at The Smith Zoo.
Then add the time, place, etc. Print it double sided, fold in half, tape shut, add address, stamp and you are ready to mail your Zoo Theme Party invitation.

Internet stores make shopping for Zoo Party decorations a snap. Do a google search for Zoo Party or Jungle Party and pick the plates, napkins and decorations that you like best. Once you get the supplies, place an order for balloons at your local party store with colors that match the supplies that you ordered.

Here is the fun part....the activities! Order pin on animal tails from a place like Oriental Trading Company. Each child will get one as they come in the door, and can "be" a zoo animal for the day. You can do the same with animal masks. Buy inexpensive blown plastic zoo and jungle animals(see resources below). Hide them all around your yard. Tell the children that the animals have escaped from the zoo and that they are animal rescuers. Give them each a bag to collect their animals. Buy enough animals to give each child enough to find. Another activity is Hippos Stuck in the Mud, which is like musical chairs. Make a mud puddle out of construction paper. Have the kids crawl around in a circle to music. Whoever is in the mud puddle when the music stops, wins. Pin the monkey on the palm tree is another great game. You can buy the game online, or make one yourself if you are crafty.

Food! The best part. Order a Curious George cake from your local supermarket. Have them remove the Curious George sign. You will have a monkey, palm trees, and nice decor. Buy a handful of cute plastic zoo animals to add to the cake, and voila! A zoo cake!
Make popcorn and place in paper bags, like you would buy at the zoo. Animal crackers are another great snack to have around. -

For favors, buy goodie bags that match your Zoo Theme decor, or use simple paper lunch bags. Choose a few cute zoo theme novelty toys from a place like Oriental Trading Company and place in the bags. Anything that fits in with your Zoo Theme will be just right. I hope that your Zoo Theme Party turns out great!

Tips & Warnings
Send your Zoo Party invitations about one month in advance.
If you have varying ages attending the party, have different goodies in the bags according to the ages. You don't want small parts getting into the hands of babies.
