1
Assess the situation. Remember that rearranging furniture involves simple repositioning or moving pieces from one area of the room to another. It should not involve heavy lifting, in which case you will want to ask the help of able-bodied family and friends.
-
2
Plan ahead. You may want to sketch your new layout so that you can envision the move and what it will entail in terms of time and energy.

3
Take your time. If you will be moving furniture by yourself, be sure to block off a sufficient amount of time. Depending on how complex your rearrangement is you will want to refrain from too much exertion and give yourself time to rest and enjoy the exercise.
-
4
Start by decluttering. Put away loose items that could get in the way or hamper your rearranging. Clear a wide path for the pieces of furniture that you will be pushing around. You would not want to trip on a toy or snag an electric cord while moving furniture.

5
Lighten the load. Consider removing cushions from the couch, drawers from the dresser and books from the bookshelf. Reassemble the pieces when they are in their new designated places. Most furniture items can be "broken up" into small, manageable pieces, like sectional sofas and stackable shelving.
-
6
Remove décor and loose accessories. Never try to move furniture that contains decorative items that could topple or slide off. Always remove lamps, electrical appliances and breakable items.
-
7
Use furniture sliders. These helpful tools are available at supermarkets and home improvement stores. Just slip a piece under each foot of a heavy piece of furniture and slide the furniture across the floor with ease. Choose the slider that works for your type of flooring (wood/tile or carpet).

Reward yourself for a job well done.

Tips & Warnings
When rearranging furniture, take the opportunity to clean all the floor and wall areas that have been unreachable before the repositioning. Be ready with the vacuum cleaner, duster, broom and floor mop. Do a good clean on the areas that will become unreachable with the new arrangement. Take the opportunity to also clean and dust the furniture and the decorative items that go with them.
Never force yourself to move a piece of furniture that you can't budge easily. When in doubt, ask for help.
