Step 1
Communicate with other parents. Speak to other parents that homeschool their children about planning a prom together. You don't have to limit yourself to only your city. If you belong to any homeschooling groups, speak to them about putting together a prom for your teenagers. You will probably find that many are very receptive to the idea. You will also find that the teenagers will be very excited, as well.
-
Step 2
Find a prom location. There are many different locations you might consider for the prom. Some community centers offer rooms at great prices. If this will not work, you might think about contacting one of local health clubs or gymnasiums to see about using their facility for one evening. Even a church gym can be a possibility.
-
Step 3
Plan the decorations and refreshments. After you have secured a place to hold the prom, start thinking about a theme and decorations. Get together with other parents and brainstorm. Make sure that all the parents are comfortable with whatever theme you choose. Find volunteers to start choosing tasks that they can complete. Pick the colors for the prom as well. You can also get the kids in on the act, as most high school teens are great at organizing.
-
Step 4
Plan the music. When you plan the music, you may find that parents have many different ideas about what they are comfortable with their children listening and dancing to. Talk it over and make sure that whatever music is chosen is acceptable to all parents, so that one child or another won’t be excluded. Then secure a DJ or band for the event.
-
Step 5
Send out prom invitations to the senior high students. This is important so that the teenagers will get that familiar feeling of anticipation. Make the invitations centered around the theme of the prom. Let each set of parents mail the invitations to another family so everyone feels involved.
-
Step 6
Take your teenager shopping. Shopping for prom clothes is so much fun. This in itself is a great time for teens. This is a good time to let them express their individuality. If they want that pink tuxedo, so be it. You don’t have to wear it. Be sure you consider accessories as well, such as shoes, corsages or boutonnieres.
-
Step 7
Get plenty of pictures. Line up a photographer to take pictures of the teenagers as they arrive at the prom. This will help serve as a memento as well. Your child will want to remember the fabulous night they had at their very own prom.
