1. Get good grades, excellent letters of recommendation, and superior exam scores. This will make you an ideal candidate for Graduate Assistantships, Teaching Assistantships, Research Assistantships, and Fellowships. Funding is competitive; so, try to be as attractive as possible.

2. Apply to as many programs as possible. The more places you choose to apply, the better your chances of a good offer. Also, be selective about the school. Do your homework to find out what the admissions statistics are. If you are not above the mean criteria of their "average" applicant, I can pretty much guarantee that they will not fund you. Try to apply to schools where you are head and shoulders above the crowd. These are the type of schools which will try to lure you with lucrative financial offers.

3. Unfortunately, you may have to change what your graduate school plans if you want to go to graduate school for free. It is very hard to get funding from professional schools i.e. (Medical School, Dental school, Law School etc.) However, for very good students, it is not that difficult to find funding from a Masters or PHD program.
