How to Make Corners on Slipcovers

Slip cover corners are simple to make. This article will teach you to make an envelope slip cover with mitered corners.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1
    Fabric , wrong side up, under foam.

    Cut fabric long enough to overlap 2"-3" at center when wrapped around the foam; and wide enough for ends to meet at foam sides plus 1/4" (for seam allowance).

  2. Step 2

    Hem (1/4") both center edges.

  3. Step 3
    Foam snugly wrapped in fabric (wrong side showing) and pinned.

    Wrap foam with fabric's wrong side showing. Pin fabric together snugly at center. Remove fabric from foam without disturbing pins.

  4. Step 4
    Top and bottom edges are pinned.

    Pin top and bottom edges. Sew edges with a 1/4" seam allowance.

  5. Step 5
    Foam inside inside out envelope.

    With envelope inside out, insert foam into envelope, ensuring foam corners are squarely in envelope's corners.

  6. Step 6
    Corners are pinned and horizontal seams are mid line.

    Pinch each corner vertically and pin in place. Ensure horizontal seams are aligned at the mid line of the foam block.

  7. Step 7
    Corners have been stitched to match foam's vertical length.

    Measure the vertical length of each foam corner. The stitching across each envelope corner should be the same length as the vertical length of each foam corner.

  8. Step 8
    Excess fabric clipped from corners.

    Clip excess fabric from each corner to 1/4".

  9. Step 9
    New mitered corner slip cover is ready.

    Turn slip cover right side out, poking out new mitered corners with fingers.

    Push foam into slipcover, using fingers to push foam squarely into the mitered corners.

Tips & Warnings
  • For large cushions, sew a strip of Velcro to the slipcover's opening.
  • These same mitered corners can modify a flat tote bag into one that can stand on it's bottom.
