How to Choose a Private School

As a teacher who has worked in private schools, I want to give you the inside scoop on how to choose a private school. As a parent it can be overwhelming, but when you choose the right school it is well worth the investment.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First compile a list of private schools in your area. Decide what you can afford and what is important to you. Check out the school websites, or a general website to find out some basic information. You want to look for the size of the school, teacher to student ratio, location and values. From this information narrow your list down to five schools that catch your eye.

  2. Step 2

Call each school and set up a tour. Private schools depend on marketing and should gladly show you around. Bring a list of questions and take notes as you walk around. If you visit 5 schools it is easy for things to begin to blend together.

  3. Step 3

You want to pay attention as you walk around to the general atmosphere of the school. Does it feel like people enjoy being there? Ask about extra curricular opportunities such as sports and clubs. Look for facilities such as computer lab, library, playground, gym, lunch area and art/music area. The school I worked at did not offer art and music, but did have a fantastic computer lab. In many cases it depends on what areas interest your child.

  4. Step 4

Talk to parents. Where your child goes to school has an enormous impact on their education and life direction, so you want to do your part to make a good choice. Go to the school about 15 minutes before it dismisses and talk to some parents, let them know you are thinking about enrolling your child and ask them what they think of the school.

  5. Step 5

If you are having trouble making a decision ask if you can sit in on a class or activity. If you don't feel comfortable being in the class ask if they are having a special event you can attend.

Tips & Warnings
  • I find that schools that offer more usually cost more. If you don't have piles of money lying around, I suggest you compromise and find a school that has the most important things on your list.
  • Once you make a decision - stay involved! Maintain regular communication with your teacher and watch what your child is doing in the classroom.
  • If you narrow down you list and you don't like any of the schools, go back to the drawing board. Take the time to find the perfect school.
  • Do not judge a school on a website, or lack thereof. Many excellent schools have not invested in internet marketing and many average schools have.
  • Look at the state standards (usually found on the board of education website) and look to see what children are learning in public schools, especially in math and english. Make sure your child doesn't lag behind.

on 2/10/2009 Right now, I am trying to get my twins into this charter school right down the street from our home. I have to wait until my twins are 4 years old, turn the apps in by Dec and there is a lottery to see who gets in. Oh, the agony!!
