How to change the brake pads and rotor's for Chevrolet 2001 Cavalier

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tire iron
  • 3/8" Allen head socket is needed
  • brake cleaner
  • face mask
  • eye protection
  • Pair of brake pads
  • Pair of Rotor's
  • A little elbow grease
  1. Step 1

Jack up car with a hand jack and or place on jack stands

  2. Step 2

Remove lug nuts from tire rim, set tire aside

  3. Step 3

use a 3/8" Allen head socket to wrench off caliper, once bolt is loose it should slide out. This bolt is very long and is not threaded all the way down, so as you wrench off you can pull the bolt and it should slide out.

  4. Step 4

There is no need to remove the caliper from the vehicle unless there is damage, so I usually slide my tire under the car a bit and place the caliper on that, DO NOT allow the caliper to hang from the brake line.

  5. Step 5

Push in caliper piston with a large C-Clamp to hold and remove the old brake pads and set them aside, place new pads on the same way the old ones came off. Remember to lube them with some brake anti squeak.

  6. Step 6

To remove the rotor you just pull away from the axle, there is no bolt.
If the rotor seems stuck maybe from rust, you can use a rubber hammer to hit the rotor and knock away some rust to loosen enough to pull off.

  7. Step 7

Slide on new rotor, remove C-clamp from caliper and place caliper back on the rotor, make sure everything is aligned correctly. Then tighten the caliper down. Replace the tire and let car down.

I'm assuming you know how to change a tire the correct way!!!

  8. Step 8

Repeat on the other side front tire.

Tips & Warnings
  • All Equipment for brake and rotor change,
  • Large C-Clamp or similar
  • 3/8" Allen head socket is needed
  • Eye protection
  • face mask
  • brake cleaner - not really necessary
  • brake pads
  • brake anti squeak
  • rotor's
  • Time
  • A little physical and mental strength
  • Always wear eye and face protection when changing brake pads and or using brake cleaner
  • always make sure the vehicle is properly supported before working around or under.
  • When working under a vehicle with jack stands its not a bad idea to place one of the tire's under the car so if the car should fall at least it would fall on the tire first to give time to slide out from under the vehicle!!!!!
