Put Free Music on Your iPod

Although iPods are automatically compatible with songs bought from the iTunes store, you can still put songs that you have downloaded from other, free services onto your iPod by adding them to your iTunes library. The process is fairly simple and ideal for fans of independent musicians, royalty-free music and even some popular music.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a new folder for your music. Keep it in a place where you will remember it, like your desktop or your "My Music" folder.

    • 2

Download your music. Websites like Royalty Free Music offer a good amount of music that is free and legal to download. However, if you want popular music (like Top 40 and Hip-Hop, you can use ad-supported services like Spiral Frog to download free music. (See "Additional Resources," below, for links to these services.)

Import your files into your iTunes library. Simply go to the file menu and select "Add file to library." Then select the folder and click "OK." You will then see your songs appear in iTunes.

    • 4

Sync iTunes with your iPod. If you have auto-sync enabled, new files will be added to your iPod automatically. However, if you use manual sync, you will need to drag each file individually to your iPod.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although it is fairly easy to download illegal music, it is illegal to do so, and these files can contain harmful adware and spyware that can harm your computer.
