Step 1
Identify the textbook from which you are citing information by recording the author's name and the page number or numbers which are being referenced. For example; if the textbook is by John Brown and the relevant pages are 92 through 98 the citation should read "(Brown 92-98)." There is not a comma between the author's name and the page number. The complete, detailed information about the textbook will appear at the end of the paper in the bibliography.
-
Step 2
Use parentheses to separate the citation from the text. The citation should be placed at the end of the sentence to which the citation is referring but before the period. For example; "Dogs are a man's best friend (Brown, 15)."
-
Step 3
Don't repeat the author's name in the citation if the name was used in the text. For example; if the text reads, "Brown supports this theory of evolution," the citation should only include the page numbers, "(92-98)."
-
Step 4
List the authors' names in the order that they appear on the textbook if there is more than one author. For example; "(Brown, Smith and Doe 92-98).'"Also, when citing different pages of the textbook that are not consecutive, the citation should read, "(92-98, 122-29, 147)." Additional variations are; citing a single page with author, "(Brown 15)." and citing a single page with author already mentioned in the text, "(243)."

Step 5
Write a bibliography at the end of the paper with the detailed information about the textbook. These details should include the name of the author or authors, the complete title and edition of textbook, the place and date of the textbook's publication and the name of the publisher of the textbook in the following format: Brown, John and Lisa Smith. Textbook Title. 3rd ed. City of Publication: Publisher, Year. (Textbook title should be italicized.)
