Get Rid of Ticks on Dogs

If you've found a tick on your dog, this is a serious issue. Follow these simple tips to rid your dog, and you, of any ticks.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • tweezers
  • Veterinarian
  1. Step 1

After you have determined that your dog has a tick, you need to remove it ASAP. First thing you need to do is find a pair of tweezers.

  2. Step 2

Now you need to sterilize the tweezers by lighting a match and holding the flame to the end of the tweezers.

  3. Step 3

Grab your pet, and carefully find the tick. Place the tweezers under the body of the tick, and carefully remove the tick. It helps if you can grab the head too, in order to ensure that you get all of the tick. Some people recommend placing finger nail polish (of any color) on the tick in order to suffocate it before removal. Keep in mind that if this is done improperly, the tick will latch down, and it will be impossible for you to remove all of the tick.

  4. Step 4

Once the tick is removed, check EVERYTHING for additional ticks. Now you need to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian so they can check for Lyme disease (a potentially fatal disease caused by ticks).

  5. Step 5

Once you have been cleared by the veterinarian, that's it. You're tick free!

Tips & Warnings
  • After your pet has been outside in a heavily wooded area, check them for ticks immediately. You also might want to check yourself.
  • This is not professional advice, act at your own risk.
