The tunisian plain stitch is simply a combination of the purl stitch and the simple stitch. The resulting effect is a piece that embodies the tight knit finish of tunisian without the look of all the stitches going in one direction; which otherwise creates an almost ribbed effect, but now looks more like zig-zags or honeycomb. [see additional resources at bottom for instructions on only the simple or purl stitch]

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Using a long tunisian crochet hook (in the size fitted for your project) take up your yarn and chain in multiples of two to desired length, plus chain three more.

  2. Step 2

Insert your hook into the back loop of the second chain from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. * Insert hook into back loop of next chain space, yarn over and pull up a loop. Repeat from * to end, keeping all loops on your hook.

  3. Step 3

Working backwards [without turning] yarn over and pull through one loop on hook. * Yarn over and pull through two loops on hook. Repeat from * until one loop remains on your hook.

  4. Step 4

Going forward again [without turning] * insert hook into the next vertical bar, yarn over and pull up a loop. Pull yarn to front of work and moving your hook over this, so as to catch the strand, insert hook into next vertical bar, yarn over and pull up a loop. Move strand back to the reverse side and out of the way. Repeat from * to last two stitches. Insert hook, yarn over, and pull up a loop from each of the last two vertical bars.

  5. Step 5

Yarn over and pull through one loop on hook. * Yarn over and pull through two loops on hook. Repeat from * until one loop remains on your hook.

  6. Step 6

    * Pull yarn to front of work and moving your hook over this, so as to catch the strand, insert hook into next vertical bar, yarn over and pull up a loop. Move strand back to the reverse side and out of the way. Insert hook into the next vertical bar, yarn over and pull up a loop. Repeat from * to end.

  7. Step 7

Yarn over and pull through one loop on hook. * Yarn over and pull through two loops on hook. Repeat from * until one loop remains on your hook.

  8. Step 8

Repeat from step four for pattern, ending with a row consisting of step one and two.
