Things You'll Need:
- VIN(vehicle identification number)
- copy of your current policy declaration page
- name and address of finance company, bank, or leasing company
- know your driving record, violations, claims and accidents
-
Step 1
First and foremost, you need to assemble the basic information needed to shop. You'll need your VIN(vehicle identification number), a copy of your current policy's declaration page(this will have all of your coverage on it), the name and address of your finance/bank or leasing company if applicable, your driver's license, know how many miles you drive per year, your mileage one way to work, the type of anti-theft device you have and if you have anti-lock brakes.
-
Step 2
Use Yahoo or Google and do searches for "auto insurance" or "car insurance". The first 2 pages of results should give you more than enough places to get quotes to effectively compare. Do yourself a favor, be as honest as possible when getting quotes, you can't hide anything, the insurance company will find out everything on your motor vehicle reports. Being dishonest will only make your rates higher or get you cancelled after purchase which is really annoying.
-
Step 3
Enter your coverage exactly as you have on your current policy. That way you have an accurate "apples to apples" comparison. If your vehicle is reaching the 10 year mark in age(or is already older) consider dropping collision coverage to save money.
