Survive a Trip to the Zoo With a Toddler

A trip to the zoo can be a fun and educational activity with a toddler. But there are also some considerations and planning that should take place to ensure it is a fun day for everyone!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Give yourself plenty of time to plan ahead of time. You will be glad that you did. Research the zoo that you plan to visit so you know all of the details such as parking, admission, and rules regarding outside food. You'll also want to know the hours they are open.

  2. Step 2

Take time to pack everything you will need for your trip to the zoo. It's always best to have extras. Things you may want to pack are snacks, sunscreen, a change of clothes, wipes, and a first aid kit.

  3. Step 3

Take a stroller or wagon along for the trip. It is likely that your little explorer will need a place to rest for at least part of the day. The stroller or wagon will also provide a place for your bag of supplies.

  4. Step 4

Prepare your toddler for the trip to the zoo by explaining what he will see. Visit the website of the zoo so he can see it ahead of time. Read books about animals or zoos.

  5. Step 5

Consider your toddler's normal schedule when planning the zoo trip. Is he an early riser? Is he most alert in the morning? Start out early so you an maximize his alert time. Try to eat at his normal meal times so he won't get overly hungry.

  6. Step 6

Plan ahead of time to visit the displays that will be most appealing to your toddler. Consider his favorite animals and displays that will likely hold his interest. By visiting these displays first, you will ensure that you don't miss them if you have to cut the trip short.

  7. Step 7

Follow your toddler's lead once you arrive at the zoo. Take breaks as needed. Try to follow the plan you established but also be flexible if your toddler wants to follow a different plan.

  8. Step 8

Take lots of pictures to document the trip. Collect maps and other souvenirs from the zoo.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't forget to bring snacks and other supplies for yourself.
