How to Change Icons on Your Mac

Icons represent the files, folders and drives on your computer. You can change those icons to personalize the computer or celebrate a holiday season. The Web is full of websites that offer free downloadable icons. Window-shop at a couple of them and download a free icon package. Make the change is seconds. Don't worry. If you change your mind, you can go back.

Instructions

      Visit an icon website. Three established sites are The Icon Factory, Icon Drawer and AppStorm Mac. Download an icon package. Open the icon folder and right-click on the icon you like. Select "Get Info" from the drop-down menu.

      Highlight the new icon at the top left of the "Get Info" window. Click on it and a blue halo appears around the icon. Type "Command" and "C" to copy the image.

      Navigate to the icon on your computer that you want to change. Right-click on the icon and choose "Get Info" from the drop-down menu.

      Highlight the image at the top left corner of the "Get Info" window by clicking on it. Type "Command" and "V" to paste the new icon into the "Get Info" window.

Tips & Warnings

  • Return to a default icon by right-clicking on the file and choosing "Get Info" from the drop-down menu. Highlight the icon in the upper left corner of the "Get Info" window and type "Command" and "X" to remove any new icon you have applied and return to the default Mac icon.
