Step 1
Turn off the water faucet when it's not in use. This is one the easiest ways to conserve water and save money. Keep this in mind when brushing your teeth, shaving, doing dishes or, if serious about saving water, while taking a shower. Soap up completely and then turn the water on, instead of running the water continuously while showering. Anyone who has had an RV with limited water supply can attest these are great ways to save water.
-
Step 2
Use grey water sources for watering plants. Examples would be using your gutter downspouts to collect water in a container or rain barrel to be used for watering your plants, using leftover water from your pets water dish, or using any other source of leftover water. Some extremists even use water collected while they shower to conserve water and save money. You might want to at least consider collecting the shower water that's not being used while waiting for it to heat up.
-
Step 3
Replace your shower head with a low flow water saving device and your faucets with water restrictors. Many times these can be found for free or discounted through your local utility company.
-
Step 4
If your toilet is not a low flow model, remedy this by placing an object such as a brick or filled gallon container in the tank to conserve water and save money.
-
Step 5
Don't flush the toilet unnecessarily for one piece of tissue. Some people limit their toilet flushing even further by following the motto "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down." This will definitely conserve water and save money, but use your own judgement.
-
Step 6
Only run your dishwasher or do laundry with full loads. Consider purchasing newer water saving models if you don't already have one, as these conserve water and will save money over time.
-
Step 7
Fix any leaks and dripping faucets. Insulate pipes so the water will heat faster and you won't have to run it as long.
-
Step 8
Even doing just a few of these things will help to conserve water and save money. For more ideas and useful information, see the links provided in the resources section below.

on 7/17/2009 I like the shower water idea. My mother, who lives with me, won't flush when she pees. I can't stand that! It grosses me out! *5

on 2/14/2009 I started using the grey water out of the shower after an enviromental class showed how the dead skin flakes and phosphates from soap help to fertilize plants and provide a low impact pesticide while conserving water. My flowers thrive on it. 5*
