Step 1
Fly the Middle of the Week. Booking your flights Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday will result in by far the cheapest fares. Don't believe me? Just play around with the dates you input for comparison sake.
-
Step 2
Fly Off Peak. Best time to fly to Europe is generally early spring; think March and April for several hundred dollars off. Flying anywhere in June is VERY expensive.
-
Step 3
Take One Bag, and CHECK. Several airlines are (rather sneakily) starting to charge you for bags. Most charge for more than one checked bag, but ALWAYS CHECK when your buying the ticket. It should say somewhere in the fine print.
-
Step 4
Subscribe. If you're a serious traveler (or even a serious saver) subscribe to your favorite airline's newsletter, and sign up for a frequent flier card. You'll get email reminders about hot deals and specials so you can always stay on top of the savings.
-
Step 5
Shop Around. Even if you have a frequent flier card, or subscribe to email savings lists, anytime you are about to book a flight, check the travel comparison sites like Orbitz and Travelocity.
-
Step 6
Consider New Options. If you're a business class fan, check out Open Skies (https://www.flyopenskies.com/os/splash). They offer business class transatlantic flights for unbelievable prices (the price of a regular COACH seat) because they have specially fitted planes where every seat IS business class, and then they offer ultra-luxe "premium" class. It only flies to Paris and Amsterdam from New York, but if that's your destination it's worth the swag.
