How to Get Two-Toned Hair

How to Get Two-Toned Hairthumbnail
Hair color can be applied with a hair color application brush.

Two-tone hair color can be done by using two different natural colors, two vibrant colors that aren't normally seen as hair color or even one of each. This hair coloring style may be done by coloring the top layer of hair a different color than the bottom layer. Some even prefer to have two different hair colors on each side of the hair. There really is no wrong way to have two-tone hair because it is all a matter of personal preference.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Hairbrush
    • Comb
    • Hair clips
    • Vaseline
    • Hair color
    • Plastic or rubber gloves
    • Color application brush
    • Plastic cap or plastic wrap
    1. Coloring the Hair

      • 1

Divide the hair into sections. This can be done by parting the hair all the way around at the top of the ears. The top section of hair will need to be colored first. If only small sections will be colored, separate them away from the rest of the hair and secure with hair clips.

      • 2

Mix the color as needed. If using a boxed hair color, the color will need to be mixed with the developer. However, if you are using an unnatural color that comes in a jar or tube, it will already be premixed.

      • 3

Apply vaseline around the hairline to protect the skin and prevent color from dripping.

      • 4

Apply color to hair sections. Do this by hand while wearing gloves or use an application brush for a more precise application. Do not allow the colors to touch. If using two or more hair colors, pay close attention to how close the colors are applied to prevent them from bleeding into each other.

      • 5

Cover the colored sections with a plastic cap or plastic wrap. This will help process the color and prevent it from bleeding onto other areas of the hair. Keep the hair covered for the amount of time specified on the hair color box or container.

      • 6

Remove the plastic cap and rinse the hair thoroughly once the color has reached your desired shade. It is best to use cool water to ensure there is no damage done to the hair follicles. Style the hair as desired.
