Old coins value is determined by a number of factors, including quality, rarity, condition, and demand. Whether you are gold coin collecting, or collecting general or rare coins, their value is constantly changing. There are several ways you can estimate your old coins value before deciding what to do with it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Active internet connection
  1. Step 1

View an updated old coins value catalog, often referred to as a “coin catalog”. You can usually find updated versions online for free viewing. Attempt to locate your coin here and determine its approximate value.

  2. Step 2

Visit a reputable coin dealer in your area. Check yellow pages listings and do research online. Make sure the dealer is trustworthy before taking in your old coins. An established dealer should be able to accurately find your old coins value.

  3. Step 3

Search the internet for other coins of the same type. You’ll often be able to find information on average price, demand, and availability to help you determine your old coins value. Hobby and coin collecting websites may also generate leads. This is a last resort, but may prove useful if coin catalogs or local dealers haven’t helped.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you determine your old coins value is lower than you had expected, you should still hold on to it. Just because your coin has a low monetary value now, doesn’t mean it will always be this way. Coin values change over time, so consider keeping it in your collection.
  • Old coins value is determined by more than just the type of coin. Grade, condition, and demand are also factors that can raise or lower the price of a particular coin. For this reason, your old coins may be worth more or less than a listing in a coin catalog.
  • Don’t visit a coin dealer without first trying to find your old coins value in a coin catalog. This way, you’ll know ahead of time the approximate price, if not an exact figure, and you’ll avoid being ripped off if you have something valuable.

on 4/1/2009 This is ok for general comments. A few links to sites you mention in Step 1 for online catalogs would have been very helpful.
