A yoga mat is the most important piece of equipment for a yoga practice. Equally important for both the novice, and the expert yogi, the right yoga mat can significantly enhance a practice by providing the right support and traction. Whether you practice power yoga, kripalu yoga, or ashtanga yoga, here are a few things to keep in mind when selecting a yoga mat.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A yoga mat
  1. Step 1

Select a yoga mat which is large enough to accomodate a wide range of postures and extensions. Taller people may want to consider a mat with extra length like the manduka black mat.

  2. Step 2

Select a mat with enough cushioning to protect spine, knees, elbows, and other body parts that frequently make contact with the floor during a yoga session.

  3. Step 3

Choose a mat based on the type of yoga practiced. A universal good quality mat is sufficient for a gentler practice like Kripalu yoga, whereas an intensely physical, and sweaty Bikram yoga session warrants a thick yoga mat with superior traction. Look for a link in the resource section for a description of different types of yoga.

  4. Step 4

Consider investing in a quality yoga mat for durability. Quality yoga mats, made with superior material withstand wear and tear better than cheaper mats that may have to replaced more often.

  5. Step 5

Consider investing in an eco-friendly yoga mat that is made from a renewable source like rubber. Eco-friendly mats are designed to decompose completely in a landfill, and they don't contain chemicals that artificially provide stickiness in conventional yoga mats.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider the weight of the mat if you have to lug it around.
  • A cotton yoga mat like a Mysore rug is helpful when additional cushioning, and sweat absorption is needed.
  • A yoga mat should be washable.
  • Choose a yoga mat in a soothing color for a meditative, interospective yoga practice.
  • Cheaper sticky yoga mats contain chemicals!
