How to do Analogies On SAT type Tests

Analogies are the bane of many test takers. Especially SAT test takers. They need not be. Try these tips to do better the next time you face and analogy question.

Instructions

1. On the SAT they will give you two words that have some sort of relationship (i.e make an analogy)

   Look at the word and determine the relationship.

   Ex. Ostrich : bird

   an ostrich is a type of bird.

2. Examine the possible answers note which ones fit

   dog : pet a dog is a type of pet
   doesn't fly : does fly no
   Honda : car a Honda is a type of car
   anaconda : snake an anaconda is a type of snake

3. Examine the relationship again. An ostrich is a type of bird and it is the largest bird.

4. dog : pet a dog is a type of pet BUT not the largest
   doesn't fly : does fly no
   Honda : car a Honda is a type of car BUT not the largest
   anaconda : snake an anaconda is a type of snake and is the largest type of snake

   Answer anaconda: snake

Tips & Warnings

• Read Read Read. The larger your vocabulary and the more precise it is the better.

• Find out if your test penalizes wrong guesses. The SAT does for instance but others do not.
