A purity ring symbolizes a person's promise to remain pure until marriage. Remaining pure means abstaining from sex before two people marry in God's eyes. The promise of purity, for either an adult or teenage man or woman, means having faith that God will decide when two people shall meet and marry. On the wedding day, the purity ring is removed and replaced by a wedding band. While wearing a purity ring, a person weathers sexual temptations by believing that God will provide a partner for marriage when the time is right.
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Three pieces of 1/2-centimeter-wide, round leather strands
- Rubbing alcohol
- Cotton balls
- Petroleum jelly
- Hot glue gun
- Cork board
- Two push pins
Measure your ring finger with a measuring tape. Add 2 inches to that number and cut the three leather strands to the appropriate size. The strands symbolize a pure mind, heart and body. Place a cotton ball over the opening of the alcohol, turn upside down and allow a generous amount to penetrate the ball. Rub the cotton ball along the three strands, applying more alcohol when needed. Scoop a dime-sized amount of petroleum jelly onto your finger and work into the leather strips. Set the strands aside and wash your hands with soapy, warm water.
Heat the glue gun by plugging it into an electrical outlet. Wait five minutes. Squeeze a small dot of glue onto the very top end of a leather strip. Attach the second leather strip at the top and press down while being careful to keep your fingers away from the glue. Place another drop of glue on top and attach the third leather strip. Press down firmly and let dry.
Push a pin into the end of the three leather strips and, to keep it in place, attach it to a cork board. Separate the strands. Begin the braid by picking up the leather strand on the right side and placing it over the middle string. Take the left piece of leather, place it over what is now the middle strand and put it between the middle and right strand. Pull gently, but firmly, in order to tighten the braid.
Repeat this motion all the way down to the end of the braid. Hold the braid at the end when finished. Push a pin through the leather and attach it to the cork board. Glue the ends together in the same fashion you glued the top three strands together, by putting two strands together first and then adding the third. Detach the leather braid by pulling out both push pins.
Squeeze a drop of glue at the end of the braid and loop the other end of the leather around to meet the glue. Press and hold for at least 10 seconds. This forms the ring. Cut off any additional leather. Slide the ring on your finger.
Tips & Warnings
- Among purity ring wearers, it is acceptable to wear a purity ring if you want a new chance at remaining pure.
- Super glue works well in place of a glue gun.
- Place the leather strips in the sun before braiding for extra softness.
- Keep children away from a hot glue gun.
- A wet ring might irritate your skin and ruin the leather. Remove the ring before showering and swimming.
