Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pen
  • Paper
  • A cup of hot cocoa (I just think is nice to drink hot cocoa) :)
  1. Step 1
    Numerator Top, Denominatori Bottom

    Numerator Top, Denominatori Bottom

Let's remember first. A fraction has a numerator and a denominator. The numerator is on top, the denominator is on the bottom.

  2. Step 2
Make the denominator the same value

Make the denominator the same value

Your main goal is to have both denominators with the same value. The easiest way is to multiply the first term by the number of the second denominator. Then do the same for the second term. It is important to remember that what you do to one number on the top must be done to the bottom, conclusion, if you multiply one denominator by 5, your numerator has to be multiplied by 5 as well.

  3. Step 3
Add the top, keep the bottom

Add the top, keep the bottom

Once you have the same denominator, you can just add the top (numerators) and keep the same denominator.

  4. Step 4
    Final Answer

    Final Answer

Your results must ALWAYS be reduced to the lowest terms. This means that your numbers numerator (top) and denominator (bottom) can not be reduced anymore by the same number.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can do this procedure anytime in order to add fractions. Remember, your main goal is to make the denominator the same value, so if you have a fraction like this: 1/3 + 5/6, the best way would be to only multiply by the number (2) the first fraction, example: 1(2)/3(2) + 5/6, you can see that the denominator will be the same, therefore you will get 2/6 + 5/6 = (2+5)/6 =7/5
