Weight loss is a topic that has received a lot of press and attention. There are thousands of products on the market that will help you lose weight. However, are they actually safe? Here's how to lose weight safely brought to you by a Registered Dietitian.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Critical Thinking
  • Time to Exercise
  • Diligence
  1. Step 1

Monitor the number on the scale. Safe weight loss means losing one to two pounds per week. This is also considered effective. Studies have shown us that those who lose weight slowly are more likely to keep it off.

  2. Step 2

Make sure to exercise most days of the week. Weight loss is about a math equation. If you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. One pound of bodyfat equals 3500 stored calories. You will need to create a 3500 calorie weekly deficit to lose one pound. Exercise is an excellent way to create this shortfall.

  3. Step 3

Avoid scams. Diet pills, weird and expensive supplements, colon cleansing, and extreme diet plans are all forms of nutrition quackery and should be avoided. Many of these methods are either unproven by research or simply unsafe. Consult a Registered Dietitian for credible, science-based recommendations.

  4. Step 4

Follow the nutrition recommendations found at www.mypyramid.gov. This is USDA's site for nutrition information. Here you can make a personalized pyramid that will show you what a safe and healthy diet should look like.

  5. Step 5

Consume plenty of fruits and vegetables, fiber-rich whole grains, low fat dairy, and water. All of these items will assist you with weight loss while helping to keep your body healthy. Try to consume a well-balance diet most days of the week.

  6. Step 6

Avoid disodered eating. Starving yourself or throwing up after meals is not the answer to safe weight loss. These are potentially life threatening methods of losing weight. If you think you may have a problem in this area, seek the help of a professional.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep a daily food journal to assist with weight loss.
  • Try to eat out less often and at home more.
  • Consult a Registered Dietitian for all of your nutrition questions.
  • Consult your Physician before beginning an exercise program.
