Step 1
On the ground, be very careful when approaching a horse. Make sure they are aware you are near by speaking to them. Avoid their "blind spot" by walking towards the shoulder and avoiding the rear.
-
Step 2
In the pasture, be very careful when there are several horses. They live in a world of pecking order, so even if they don't intend to, they can hurt you trying to avoid other horses.
-
Step 3
When leading horses, stay to the side, but close to the horse. Don't allow them to touch noses with other horses while leading. They could suddenly bite or strike at each other causing the leader harm.
-
Step 4
MareWhen grooming or tieing, stand to the side of the horse. The shoulder is the safest place. It allows the horse to see and know you are there. Always watch the horses feet when you are handling them.
-
Step 5
When releasing a horse back into the pasture or paddock, always turn the horses head back towards the gate and step through it before removing the halter. This will avoid you being in the line of fire in case they kick up their heels.

on 9/24/2009 Nice article. We require all children to wear helmets when working with horses, even on the ground. Helmets can be life savers! 5*s.
