Paper Train a Puppy
Paper Train a Puppy

We raised a litter of 7 goldendoodle puppies and they were paper trained by 5 weeks old. It's super easy and works!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Either paper or fabric pee pads
  1. Step 1

You will need either paper or fabric pee pads. The best paper pee pads are the quilted ones. Don't even waste your money on the others. The puppies will start tearing them up after about 7 weeks old so you may want to opt for the fabric pee pads. The fabric ones hold WAY more fluid then the paper ones and you just wash them and re-use. A much better option given the "green" theme of the times. You can find the fabric pee pads on ebay, they are the same pads you see used in hospitals. I don't like to use paper, they will shred it to pieces and the print gets everything, including your dogs, full of black print.

  2. Step 2

Confine your pup either in a caged area that has a sleeping area, feeding area and toileting area. Or you can confine them in a small room like a laundry room or bathroom. Make sure and pick up any area rugs, electric cords, tennis shoes, cleaning supplies and close the lid of the toilet if they are in a bathroom.

  3. Step 3

Take your pee pad and wipe up a pee spot with it. I bought the non-skid stuff that your put on your kitchen shelves and put it under the pee pads to prevent them from sliding all over the floor when the pups walk on them. By putting the scent of pee on the pad it will draw your pup to pee on the pad.

  4. Step 4

Keep the pups sleeping area spotless and free of any pee or poop. If there is any smell of pee or poop in their bed they may pee there. But for the most part dogs will not pee or poop where they sleep. Also, if you pup happens to step in the poop (and guaranteed they will) wash their paws so they don't track it in their sleeping area.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a small putty knive to scrape off poop from the fabric pee pad before you wash them in the washing machine.
