Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flashlight, screwdriver.
  1. Step 1

You want to first identify the disposal's manufacturer. Before you turn the disposal on, you want to lift the rubber splash guard in the sink your disposal is connected to with a screwdriver to look down inside of the unit. This works best if you use a flashlight. Look to see if there's any rust around the upper ring just under the splash guard. Also look to see if there are any missing, rusted or broken blades within the disposal. If so, It may be getting to old to work properly.

  2. Step 2

Now turn on the water and let it run down into the disposal. Turn the disposal on and listen for any excessive vibration or noise. Then look to see if the blades are rotating correctly.

  3. Step 3

Finally, look under the sink to see if there is any rust on the unit and to see if there are any leaks or poor electrical connections. Remember, all electrical wires to the disposal should be enclosed within a conduit. If you notice any problems, have a professional take a good look at it to determine if the unit needs replaced.

  4. Step 4
