Cut Your Dog's Hair and Save Money

To keep your dog groomed well you’ll need to periodically cut his/her hair to take some length off the coat. This article and the attached video will teach you how to cut your dog’s hair yourself to save money by not going to the groomer.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clipper and Clipper Blade
  • Clipper Coolant
  • Optional: Grooming Noose
  1. Step 1

Purchase a clipper blade for your dog. There are different blades for different dogs. Different blades can be used on different areas of your pet’s hair/coat. A good idea is to get recommendations for blade types at your local pet store. Some manufacturers are Andis, Laube, Oster, and Conair. Use clipper coolant to keep the blades from getting too hot. If there are any mats in your dog's hair brush or comb them out before starting.

  2. Step 2

You have an option of using or not using a grooming noose. Some owners prefer to use them for comfortableness and safety. You will see an example of a grooming noose and post in the attached video. If you are using a grooming noose you won’t need it when you first start cutting your pet’s hair. Take length off the entire coat and ears.

  3. Step 3

Without using the noose, hold up your pet’s head with the hand you don’t have the clipper in. Power on the clipper and start on the back of the head and run the clipper down the head and neck in the same direction in which the hair grows. Move quickly, but be sure to not go too fast because you don’t want the cuts to be uneven.

  4. Step 4

Hold up your pet’s head to cut up under and around the neck. If you are using a grooming noose, put it around your dog’s neck. Lay one ear flat in your hand and run the clipper down the ear hair being careful not to cut the edge of the ear, then do the other ear. You’ll hold the legs and paws in the same manner and run the clipper down them.

  5. Step 5

If you are cutting the cheeks and the top of the head, if you prefer, you can use a comb that is a little longer in order to leave the hair a little longer in those areas. Being sure to cut in the direction the hair grows, cut to the length you prefer and the length that will look good and last until the next cut. Pick up the ears to cut the hair on the cheeks. Now, you’re finished until your pooch’s next haircut.
