Things You'll Need:
- Emergency Action Plan
-
Step 1
First of all you should always make sure that all of your smoke detectors are in working condition and that the batteries have been replaced within the last year.
-
Step 2
The next thing you should do is draw a diagram of your home showing all the rooms with arrows leading to the exits. This could be placed in your hallway on the wall or just used to show your family what route they should take in case of an emergency.
-
Step 3
Your family should decide on a meeting place outside and away from your home within a safe area so that everyone can be accounted for.
-
Step 4
You should have a list of contacts or leave your number with neighbors so that you can be contacted in case of an emergency.
-
Step 5
Explain to your children to stay low when exiting the home during a fire since the smoke and heat tend to rise. Make sure that they know never to hide in closets or under their beds, these seem to be the place where most children are found when they are scared.
-
Step 6
If a fire should ever take place exit your home immediately. Never attempt to put the fire out yourself let the fire department do it for you. Call 9-1-1 from a neighbors house.
