The combination of exposure to cold outdoors and heat indoors can lead to a dry, flaky, itchy scalp, particularly during winter months. To prevent itchy scalp in winter and keep your hair healthy during the chilly season, you’ll need to tailor your hair treatment to increase moisture to reduce dry scalp. Consider these steps to prevent itchy scalp in winter.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Increase your water consumption to boost the moisture in your skin and prevent itchy scalp in winter. Cutting the amount of diuretics in your diet like caffeinated beverages or alcohol can also have a positive effect on your dry scalp.

  2. Step 2

Stimulate the glands on your scalp that produce oil by brushing with a scalp brush that features bristles with rounded tips. The brushing will also loosen flakes resulting from a dry scalp.

  3. Step 3

Change your hair care routine and avoid washing your hair every day. To spruce it up on the non-washing days, consider using a dry shampoo product like Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo To Go or Klorane Extra Gentle Dry Shampoo.

  4. Step 4

Swap your summer hair care products for versions that will prevent itchy scalp in winter. Shampoo, conditioners and hair treatments with shea butter, for example, increase moisture to reduce dry scalp and flaking. Work the hair care product (like a shea butter conditioner) into your scalp before exposing your scalp to hot water in the shower, for example.

  5. Step 5

Reduce the amount of dry heat you expose your dry scalp to indoors by using a humidifier to add moisture to the air.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consult your doctor if your itchy scalp persists despite home treatment. If you can’t prevent itchy scalp in winter, the cause may be scalp psoriasis or an allergic reaction that a doctor can treat topical steroids or prescription products aimed at scalp psoriasis.
