I live in a tropical climate where cockroaches abound and have discovered some simple tactics for getting rid of them. Small improvements can mean a vast difference in the frequency of their visits. And as much as we all want to hone our cockroach hunting skills, here are some simple solutions for keeping them out!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Wipe up cockroach water supply!

Wipe up standing water. Cockroaches are essentially water bugs and would love to take a dip in the cereal bowl you left soaking overnight. Make sure the bathroom and kitchen are bone dry!

  2. Step 2
    Clean up cockroach food supply!

Clean up the kitchen. Everyone gets busy and it is tempting to leave dishes in the sink or crumbs on the counter when you are rushing around. But as tempting as leaving the mess for later can be, clean it up now! It could mean the difference between coming home to a clean kitchen or a juicy cockroach!

  3. Step 3

Take the garbage out nightly. While you may think you've cleaned up, all you've really done is laid out a cockroach' s dream buffet. Walking to the dumpster can be a daunting task when you're pooped, but it's worth not waking up to a six legged friend.

  4. Step 4
    Plug up cockroach access points!

Fill in any cracks or holes. No matter how small the crack or how big the cockroach, somehow they manage their way in. So if you have any crevices that need filling, caulk them up!

  5. Step 5

Spray any windows or outdoor access points like patio doors to maintain cockroach control. These can be prime entrances for cockroaches.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try these steps before buying expensive chemical sprays or hiring an exterminator!
  • Be consistent with all of these steps. They should become daily habits so you don't see the return of your unwanted cockroach guests!

on 2/22/2009 Nice article! I've also found that boric acid (not as bad as it sounds) mixed with a little honey and placed on a cabinet will deter cockroaches, and keep them from coming back. Just make sure your pets don't get into it! 5*
