How to Install RAM

Install RAM
Install RAM

This article will show you how to install RAM (Random Accessible Memory) - Your computers temporary storage - in order to help improve the performance of your computer

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phillips Screwdriver
  • Anti-Static Mat (Optional)
  • Anti-Static Wristband (Optional)
  1. Step 1

Firstly disconnect the mains from the computer and wait for 7-10 minutes to clear all electricity from the PSU.

  2. Step 2

Next remove the case, for more help on this read my article 'How to remove your computers case'

  3. Step 3

Look on the motherboard for 2-4 slots which are around the length of a pencil and about 1 cm wide - Their should already some RAM in one of the slots or possible more unless your building pc from scratch

  4. Step 4

If you find that all the slots are taken, find the one with lowest memory e.g. 512MB. If slots are free jump to Step 6.

  5. Step 5

Now remove this one by lowering the clips either end of the RAM stick and it will slowly push it self up, you can then pick it up and put it on your anti-static mat

  6. Step 6

If all slots are free, take the RAM stick (Make sure you're grounded) and push it firmly BUT not to snap it into the slot

  7. Step 7

Once both sides are in, push the two levers either end of the RAM and it will 'click' into place.

  8. Step 8

Now replace your cover and when you startup it should automatically recognise it. If it doesn't read all the steps again and start from the beginning.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you wear a grounding wire else you could fry your new RAM
  • Never think it won't happen to you because it can and it will, GROUND yourself. Theirs nothing worse than fitting a new £300 graphics card and finding it don't work
