Things You'll Need:
- One cake mix (in a box)
- One can of chocolate frosting
- Candy
- Candles
- Wooden skewer
- Paper for sail
-
Step 1
Bake your cake mix according to package directions and bake in two circle cake pans (either 8" or 9"). It doesn't have to be chocolate but it is helpful since your frosting will be chocolate. Once cooled, remove from the cake pans and carefully cut both cakes in half and lay them on their side, flat side up. You might need to cut a little flat spot on the bottom so they will sit up without issue. It's highly recommended to take some wooden skewers, maybe 3, and stick through the entire halves so they stay together. You will likely need to cut down the wooden skewer or saw down a little. You don't want them to be visible. Once skewered, wrap in plastic wrap to prevent freezer burn, and stick in the freezer for a few hours.

Step 2
Remove from the freezer and place cake once again on its side with the flat side up. Make sure it is stable! Place the cake on the serving dish you will use when the cake is done. However, first place two sheets of parchment paper, wax paper, or foil under the cake - they should meet halfway under the center of the cake. These will be pulled away once entirely frosted. Then, frost the cake with chocolate frosting.
-
Step 3
Decorate! You can choose to remove the paper underneath now or at the very end. Then you want to decorate with candy to make the pirate theme complete. Wrapped gold Rolo candies look like treasure, Whoppers look like cannonballs! If you pile the Whoppers a little (use frosting like glue) it looks even more realistic. Also stick unwrapped Rolos on the side of the cake, three evenly spaced, for the cannons! You can use Pirouette cookies around the perimeter of the ship as a little ledge. And then if you wish, use the cut-out of a pirate and mount on tagboard, add a wooden skewer to the back and stick in the cake! The final touch is the sail. Take a wooden skewer and a piece of white paper. Cut the paper out in a sail shape and then poke holes and weave the paper in/out of the skewer a little. Then stick in the cake. It will look so great!

Step 4
Finishing touches: It would be extra fun to put your cake on scrunched up blue tissue paper to mimic water! And add some gummy fish as well!
